AWAL Powders: The Environmentally Responsible Choice
At AWAL, we take pride in our commitment to sustainability. Our powder coatings offer significant advantages over traditional liquid coatings, making them the smart choice for both performance and the planet.
Powder Coating is a type of coating applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. Unlike conventional liquid paint, which uses an evaporating solvent, powder coating is typically applied electrostatically and then cured under heat or with ultraviolet light. The powder used can be either a thermoplastic or a thermoset polymer. Here are some key points about powder coating:
Application Process:
- Powder coating involves spraying finely ground particles of pigment and resin onto electrically grounded parts.
- The substrate (surface to be coated) is first pretreated, similar to conventional liquid-coated parts.
Advantages:
- Thicker Coatings: Powder coatings can create thicker coatings compared to liquid coatings without running or sagging.
- Minimal Appearance Differences: They produce minimal differences in appearance between horizontally and vertically coated surfaces.
- Low VOC Emissions: Since no carrier fluid evaporates, the process emits few volatile organic compounds (VOC).
- Color Blending: Multiple powder colors can be applied before curing, allowing for color blending and special effects in a single layer.
Film Thickness and Texture:
- While thick coatings cure to a smooth, texture-free finish, applying smooth thin films can be challenging.
- As film thickness decreases, the texture becomes more “orange-peeled” due to particle size and glass transition temperature.
- Most powder coatings have a particle size range of 2 to 50 μm, with curing temperatures around 200 °C for 10 to 15 minutes.
Applications:
- Powder coating is mainly used for coating metals, including household appliances, aluminum extrusions, drum hardware, automobiles, and bicycle frames.
- Advancements in technology allow powder coating of materials like plastics, composites, carbon fiber, and MDF (medium-density fiberboard).
- Remember, powder coating provides a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint, making it a popular choice for various industries.
Why Choose AWAL Powders Coating?
- Minimal Environmental Impact: Our powder coatings contain no-low solvents or VOCs, ensuring a cleaner application process and reducing harm to the environment.
- Single-Coat Excellence: AWAL powder coatings achieve superior chemical, mechanical, and weathering performance with just one coat. This efficiency translates to less product usage and energy consumption during application and curing.
- Resource Reclamation: Any overspray can be reclaimed, reused, or recycled, resulting in an impressive utilization rate. We believe in minimizing waste and maximizing efficiency.
- No Toxic Sludge: Unlike some other coating methods, our process generates no toxic sludge, eliminating the need for hazardous landfill disposal. AWAL Powders contribute to a cleaner world.
- Versatile Pretreatment Options: Our powders can be applied over both chrome and non-chrome pre-treatments, providing flexibility without compromising performance. Plus, they do not require a chrome-based primer.
